Golf-ball grade guide: what to buy and what to avoid
The Grade Guide
used vs refurbished vs refinishedWhat grade should you actually buy?
Sellers use a dozen different words for the same ball — and a few words that hide a very different product. Here is the canonical ladder BallIndex maps every listing onto, lowest risk first.

The distinction that matters most
Used / recycled balls are found, cleaned and graded. The original cover and paint are intact, so a Mint or 4A recycled ball plays close to new. These are the value sweet spot.
Refurbished & refinished balls are chemically stripped and repainted — sometimes with the wrong logo — and the cover may be sanded. Spin, feel and durability are compromised. This is not the same as a recycled used ball, which is why BallIndex excludes them from default rankings and labels them clearly.
Lake balls are pulled from water hazards. They look fine but can be waterlogged after months submerged, which kills distance. Range balls are limited-flight (80–90% distance) and are not meant for the course at all.
Quick recommendations
- Premium feel, value price: a Mint / 5A or 4A recycled Pro V1 / TP5 / Chrome Soft. Plays like new for a fraction of RRP.
- Lose a lot of balls: bulk 3A recycled, or new value models (Supersoft, Soft Feel, Duo Soft).
- Practice / range bag: 2A or practice/X-out — fine for the cost.
- Avoid unless you understand the trade-off: refurbished, refinished and lake balls.
